The once-thriving roasted guinea fowl business in Zebilla in the Bawku West District is facing a significant decline due to skyrocketing prices.

Market women, like Kabiru Amira, lament that the delicacy has become a luxury, deterring buyers.

In recent years, the cost of a guinea fowl has surged from GHS50-70 to GHS150-200, making it unaffordable for many.

Amira, who has sold roasted Guinea Fowl for five years, recalls selling them for GHS20-15. Now, production costs and feeding expenses have driven prices up.

“This lucrative business, mostly run by women at the Immigration Barrier, was a hotspot for passengers traveling between Bawku and Bolgatanga. But the high cost has completely discouraged patronage,” Amira told Dreamz News.

The Bawku West District is renowned for its grilled and roasted Guinea Fowl, a staple for travelers.

However, the price hike threatens the livelihoods of these market women.

As the women struggle to sustain their businesses, concerns grow about the long-term impact on the local economy and food culture.
