The National Democratic Congress has called on the media fraternity to speak out against the alleged use of military and other security personnel to intimidate and perpetrate other forms of injustice against citizens of the country particularly during the voters registration exercise.

Speaking at a presser at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday August 13, 2020, the Director of Elections of the party, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah urged the media to publicly condemn alleged acts of intimidation carried out by the government as the media is at risk of suffering from such acts.

The umbrella party contended that if the intimidations are not condemned and discouraged, it would be dire especially for the media in the December polls as the government would deploy all means to avoid being exposed by the inky fraternity in its determination to hinge on to power at all cost.

“If we don’t condemn these things and speak directly against them, you know what is going to during the elections? And you the media, you are in more danger because if they do these things and you record them then they would attack you. They don’t want you to have evidence so don’t keep quiet! You have to speak out,” the party’s Director of Elections stated.

The NDC also accused the Electoral commission of conspiring with the government to rig the 2020 elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party. The party maintained that the purpose for the compilation of the new electoral roll was to suppress votes in strongholds of the NDC but the conspiracy did not work as the registration recorded high numbers in the NDC’s strongholds. It argued the exercise has exposed the NPP and the EC’s claim that the old register was bloated. The party believes the register has been compromised by the actions of the EC and the NPP.
