General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the NDC will contest and win the 2020 Elections regardless of the irregularities with the electoral processes and the alleged deliberate attempts by the Electoral Commission (EC) to thwart their chances of winning.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah who expressed his party’s discomfort with the electoral processes stated that the opposition party will not boycott the December Elections in spite of the supposed attempts by the commission to frustrate their efforts of winning the elections adding that the commission will be compelled to acknowledge their victory in the December polls as it will be the will of the electorates.
He further stated that even though they believe the electoral processes are comprised, they will comply with the modalities laid out by the commission because of their commitment to ensure that the stability of the nation is maintained but will be doing so with caution.
“we are going along (with the processes) because we don’t want to create problems for this nation but we are going along with our conviction that if you have to eat with the devil, you must have a long spoon. We want to put on record that we are filing these nominations because they say so and we will not boycott the elections. No matter what system they put in place, we will still participate in the elections and win. And they will be compelled to declare us winners because the people of Ghana wants us back,” he stated.
Speaking at the commission’s headquarters in Accra during the filing of nomination on behalf of his party’s flagbearer, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah complained about the absence of a certified voters’ register stating that they have had to delay the filing of nominations because of the challenges with the provisional register. The NDC General Secretary recounted how the commission disregarded his party’s cautions against the compilation of a new register when the General Elections is just some few months away stating that they have been vindicated with the many infractions witnessed with the processes.
“(when the EC decided to compile a new register) We indicated to them that according to their own time table, we will run this election into an absurd situation where the time the register will be ready, the period of the filing of nominations would have expired.
Alternatively, if we are not careful, we will be filing nominations based on a provisional register. We stand vindicated today. We have been given 5 days to file nominations, what register are we filling the nomination based on?” He said.
He continued to say “it is called provisional register because it has not been certified. The Commission’s conduct indicates that the document is provisional and it keeps on changing. Some of our supporters who had completed the document were calling that the commission has called to change their ID cards and so the particulars we had captured have to be revised and we don’t know whether what we submitted even constitute the final document, “
While questioning the competence of the EC’s officials, the NDC’s General Secretary alleged that the commission have instructed them to comply with an act that has been repealed over two decades ago. He insisted that the competence of the commissioners is questionable since they are not breast of the basic legislative instruments guiding the electoral processes.
