Some top security officials and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police will lose their jobs under a next government of the National Democratic Congress.
According to the party, Ghana is on a downward spiral, fast descending to the edge of lawlessness following what they further say are increasing attacks and brutality of innocent citizens in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
“The NDC is totally disgusted by the thuggish and criminal shooting incident involving a gang of NPP thugs who were led by Hawa Koomson, which has received both national and international condemnation, and which have been admitted by the Minister of State herself. We condemn in no uncertain terms such thuggery sponsored and led by a high-ranking government official and law maker who is supposed to uphold the law at all times,” the party’s Director of Elections Elvis Afriyie Ankrah said at a press conference on Wednesday.
While the party believes the security agencies are acting in bad fate in relation to violence around the voter registration exercise, it has served notice of mass dismissal of security officials and personnel suspected to be aiding and abetting brutality on civilians.
National Communications Officer of the NDC Sammy Gyamfi told the press that “We are in opposition. We birthed this fourth republican democracy and as a responsible opposition and law abiding political party it is our responsibility to continuously highlight these acts of violence, these cruel acts which have the tendency to plunge this country into chaos and doom”.
Sammy Gyamfi downplayed the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to prosecute Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, Minister for Special Development Initiatives for firing warning shots at a registration centre.
Though the police have invited the minister over the matter, the vociferous NDC spokesman said “What has happened is not an invitation. It is just a cover up and we are aware and we know what the plan is. We are telling them (police) and all the people there that they are making their police career and the military officers are making that respected security agency coterminous with that of President Akufo Addo. The day Akufo Addo will leave office will be the last day they will serve as police officers and military men”.
Meanwhile the Ghana Armed Forces has refuted reports suggesting military officers in the Volta region are brutalising residents and preventing them from participating in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
A statement signed by Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces Col. E. Aggrey-Quashie said “Checks and verifications by the GAF and from independent sources have proved that the claims are false and unfounded.”
It added “We wish to stress that in its deployment along the country’s borders, troops have conducted themselves with professionalism and maintained a posture of non-violence and non-intimidation.”
