The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding for reassurance from the Electoral Commission that the outcome of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary polls will not be rigged.
Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the polls, Director of Operations for the NDC’s 2020 campaign, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey said the commission must demonstrate that it is committed and resolve to spearhead the conduct of a credible elections which results will be acceptable by all parties involved.
This, Mr. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey asserted, will allay fears expressed by his party and its members over a possible rigging of the elections in favor of the governing party.
“We urge the EC to take cognizance of the apprehensions and anxieties being expressed by some members of the general public over reports about possible rigging of the election and to reassure the citizenry of its uprightness, preparedness and commitment to conduct free, fair transparent and credible elections,” he stated.
The former National Security Coordinator also served notice that his party will not allow the outcome of the elections to be manipulated.
He said although they are committed to ensure a peaceful Elections, his party and its members will resist at the peril of their lives any attempt to “steal” the verdict of the Ghanaian electorates.
“Our commitment in the NDC is to defend the 1992 Constitution and all its provisions on elections even at the peril of our lives. The NDC and its leadership insist that the will of the people must prevail at the end of the counting. We are confident of our chances and we not going to do anything that is unlawful but we expect the same of the other side,” he said.
The National Democratic Congress and its presidential candidate have raised numerous concerns about the electoral processes leading to the general elections expressing doubts about the impartiality of the electoral management body and alleging that the EC is scheming with the governing party to rig the election.
But the commission dismissed such allegations arguing that the electoral processes have been credible and that it has put in place mechanism that makes it impossible for the elections to be rigged.
