The team of Environmental Health Workers of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in charge of burying COVID-19 bodies have lamented the lack of attention and logistical support from government.
Leader of the team Inspector Joseph Asutanga disclosed that the team is overwhelmed with the number of dead bodies to be buried and calls for logistical support to continue the burial have fallen on deaf ears.
“We are constrained. From February, April and March till now when we started this burial, we have been constrained. I’m short of words and I don’t know whether policy makers are really listening and seeing that the COVID-19 burial also needs attention. The people responsible for the burial also need attention. They seem to relegate all that matters about COVID-19 burial to our fate,” Mr. Asutanga said on TV3 monitored by dreamzfmonline.com.
He stressed that though they are committed to keep working amidst the challenges and lack of logistics, they may be compelled to take a decision when they cannot bear it anymore.
Ghana’s case load currently stands at 40,097 with 3,253 active cases and a death toll of 206, making Greater Accra Region the highest hit in terms of cases and deaths.
According to the burial team, some families of persons who died from COVID-19 have interfered in the burial process, demanding to have bodies of their dead relatives. A demand Mr. Asutanga said cannot be granted.
