Lawyers for a journalist with Accra-based Power FM who is in the custody of the police for allegedly insulting and threatening president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo say their client has been kept in an unknown place they are yet to discover.
Oheneba Boamah Bennie was invited by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday for questioning over alleged threats against president Akufo-Addo.
Lawyer Victor Kojogah Adawudu told Joy fm their client’s whereabout is not known after he was arrested and detained by the police.
A statement by the CID inviting the journalist directed him to report to the headquarters of the CID at 10:00 AM on Monday to assist further investigations into the matter.
But the CID on Monday, December 14, 2020 released a public statement disclosing that it affected the arrest of the journalist upon his arrival to its office for interrogation and has since detained him.
The statement further disclosed that Mr. Boamah, age 36, has been provisionally charged with offensive conduct and publication of false information contrary to the Criminal and Other Offences Act.
“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday, December 14, 2020 arrested suspect Oheneba Boamah, a radio presenter with Power FM in Accra. The suspect was officially arrested on his arrival for further investigation.
He has been cautioned on the offences of offensive Conduct Conducive to Breaches of the Peace and Publication of False News contrary to section 207 and 208(1) respectively of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, Act 29/60,” it said in the statement adding “meanwhile, the suspect has been detained in police custody for further action.”
The journalist reportedly published a video on his Facebook wall in which he made unpalatable comments and issued threats against president Akufo-Addo following the outcome of the December 7 election which the opposition NDC alleged was rigged in favor of the president.
Meanwhile the police have explained that the journalist is being kept in an unknown place for security reasons.
