Sisters Keepers Association, an International Women’s Advocacy Group has expressed shock at another incident of attempted lynching of a 60 year old woman who was accused of witchcraft.
Meri [Mariam] Ibrahim was on Saturday August 29, 2020 physically attacked in her home at Sumpini, a community in the Savannah region by a group of people wielding machetes and sticks because some community members had accused her of bewitching them.
She lost her finger and sustained deep wounds on several parts of her body.
This latest incident follows the killing of a 90 year old woman over similar witchcraft accusations in Kafaba, another community in the Savannah region.
Some four other women who were also accused of witchcraft have fled the community to escape suffering similar fate.
In a statement signed by the group’s Head of Communications Abena Opokua Ahweneé, the women’s advocacy group said “This comes in as a surprise to SKA after the lynching to death of a 90 year old Madam Akua Dente at Kafaba in East Gonja District of the Savannah Region few months ago where the perpetrators are still in court for prosecution”.
It added that “The Association highly condemns the inhumane treatment meted out to the woman and therefore call on the necessary law enforcement agencies to as a matter of urgency investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book. The Association wishes to bring to the notice of the public that Alzheimers/Dementia is a condition among the elderly therefore the need to have enough knowledge about this disease to inform our relationship with them in these times”.
The charity organisation further assured of its resolve to continue to show interest in the matter until the perpetrators are brought to book.
Meanwhile, five persons have since been arrested by the Savannah regional police for their involvement in the attack.
