A former Executive Secretary to the Inspector General of Police Supt Peter Lanchene Toobu has waded into the ongoing conversation around a gun firing action by a minister of state.
Mavis Hawa Koomson, a member of parliament who doubles as Minister for Special Development Initiatives on Monday July 20, caused mixed reactions when she fired warning shots at a voters registration centre in her constituency.
The minister said she felt threatened when she visited the registration centre situated at Kasoa, a reason she fired the shots to scare her oppressors.
In a Facebook post seen by dreamzfmonline.com, the former high ranking police officer who is currently the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for the Wa West constituency wondered why the minister fired a gun shot amidst a democratic process.
“Firing a gun at Registration Centre! Impliedly you will need bombs & grenades on Dec 7 to justify the fact that you fought fiercely but lost. It’s normal to see defeat staring at one’s face. The bullet is never an answer in the search for victory towards national development,” he wrote.
He questioned: “Was training to fire in a democratic process part of the Special Development Initiatives?”
Some security analysts have meanwhile called for the dismissal of the minister.
“This is our political culture and it is my hope that His Excellency the President would ask Mrs. Hawa Koomson to step aside by tomorrow afternoon or probably dismiss her,” Professor Kwesi Aning said on Monday.
