FOOD DISTRIBUTION TO VULNERABLE GROUPS DURING LOCKDOWN

Government’s announcement of spending an amount of GH¢54.3 million to supply dry food packs and hot cooked meals for vulnerable groups during the lockdown has sparked a new wave of reaction from Ghanaians on social media.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta told parliament during a mid year budget review that government through the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection had expended over 50 million cedis to cater for the targeted vulnerable groups.

“Mr Speaker, the support to households, in terms of supply of dry food packs and hot cooked meals cost Government GH¢54.3 million to enable them mitigate the impact of the pandemic. This was in addition to an amount of GH¢50.2 million transferred to the 400,000 most-vulnerable individuals under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme,” Mr. Ofori Atta said.

This announcement has however raised questions with a section of Ghanaians questioning the credibility of the figures while others agree with the stated expended amount.

Some social media comments and reactions seen by dreamzfmonline.com suggests varying responses to the statement of the minister for finance.

Some social media users impugned absurdity on the financial figure.

“Was the food cooked by Kempiski or Senchi Royal?” A social media user by name Jonathan Akanbul questioned.

Another social media user by name Yaw Ohemeng Kyei wrote “That is the position of government. If you doubt his figure bring your own figure for us to interrogate.

What is 400,000 people ×GH10/ day. GH10 even includes delivery fee. You don’t get it anywhere. Ghanaians must appreciate.”
