The West African Examination Council has condemned the actions of the proprietor and students of Bright Senior High School in Kukuratumi in the Eastern Region.
In a statement on Friday, August 7, 2020 the Council said it strongly condemns the actions of the proprietor and students of the school. It added that assault on examination officials is a breach of Section 8 (1) of the WAEC Act, 2006 (Act 719) and therefore punishable.
“The Council strongly condemns the behavior of the proprietor and candidates of Bright SHS as reported and wishes to caution that such unruly behaviour contravenes Section 8 (1) of the WAEC Act, 2006 (Act 719) which frowns on and sanctions acts of assault on Examination officials,” it cautioned.
WAEC also announced the relocation of the examination centre at the School to Ofori Panin Senior High School. The relocation WAEC said is to protect the integrity of the examination and guarantee the safety of its officials assigned to the examination centre.
“In order to ensure the integrity of the examination and safeguard the lives of examination officials (Supervisors, Invigilators and WAEC officers) assigned to the centre, the Council has decided to, in the interim, relocate the centre from Bright Senior High School to Ofori Panin Senior High School effective Saturday, 8th August, 2020,” the statement said.
This comes after the proprietor of the school allegedly instigated the students to attack WAEC officials supervising examination at the school in the ongoing WASSCE examination on Thursday. The WAEC officials alleged that the proprietor of the school ordered the students to attack them after they stopped the students from engaging in examination malpractices during supervision of the Social Studies paper yesterday.
Mr. David Nii Gyan who is the leader of the WAEC officials told the press that they had discovered materials of the subject they were writing in the possession of students and ordered the seizure of the materials. But the Proprietor of the school got infuriated with their actions and unleashed the students to attack them.
A reporter with the Daily Graphic who was on the campus to report on the incident also accused the proprietor of instigating the students to attack him. The reporter said the students pursued and attacked him when they spotted him taking videos of the incident.
The Police CID has since arrested the proprietor of the school after the incident was reported to the police. No student has however been arrested.
