The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has condemned the attacks in the region carried out by alleged separatist’s groups. While detailing the activities of the attacks and calling out the government for its seeming failure to avert some of the acts, the House put out five occurrences which it deems as a source of worry and frustration to the people of the region.
In a statement signed by Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, who is the Vice President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and issued last Sunday, the Chiefs enumerated worrying incidents prior to the recent attacks:
“1..The statement, a few years ago, by Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, urging the killing of the Voltarians and Gas;
2 The recent statement by K. T. Hammond, recorded on video, that the people of the Volta Region are not Ghanaians, but Togolese;
3.The recent, “mistaken” exclusion of the Region’s roads from the national budget; and,
4.The disrespect shown to the Chiefs during visits by political leaders to the region.
5.The video circulated by one Kevin Taylor, supposedly based in the United States of America, in which he alleged that the government was planning to send vigilantes to foment trouble in the Region, ahead of the elections, with a view to disrupting same.”
The Chiefs noted that these incidents have consequences on the peace of the region, urging all to embrace peace.
Meanwhile Government, through Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has assured the Chiefs that government is doing all it can to avert other attacks, urging the chiefs to ensure that they work in concert with government so that the situation can be brought under control.
