The complete disconnection of the main Bolgatanga-Bawku road in the Upper East region is beginning to bit hard on businesses and travellers in that part of the country.
Following heavy rains and the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, the Kobore Bridge which lays across the White Volta has been submerged under heavily flowing water, cutting off Bawku, Pusiga, Tempane and neighboring Togo.
Portions of the road have also been washed away as deep gullies are created.
Hundreds of travelers and vehicles have been stuck on the stretch as officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation and the Police have mounted a barricade, to prevent anyone from attempting to cross the invisible bridge and portions of the road.
Some travelers and transport operators who spoke to dreamzfmonline.com bemoaned the effect of the situation on their schedules and businesses.
The travelers say an intervention from government to fly them across will be highly welcomed.
“I was supposed to take my sister to the Bawku Presbyterian hospital for her checkup. She was involved in an accident. As it is now, we don’t know how we can get there. This is an emergency and if we could be helped to fly over only for emergency situations,” a helpless traveler by name Judith Ayinogre said.
It is not exactly clear when the situation will normalize to allow for access to vehicles and travelers as the rains continue to fall heavily in the region.
Meanwhile, thousands of farm lands have also been completely flooded in the Bawku West District.
