An inmate, who is a beneficiary of a prison support program and could likely gain his freedom in the not too distant future, gave the contact of lady friend he met while in police custody to be invited to an event at the Navrongo Central Prison that could see him out of jail instead of the contact of a family member.

The reason for giving out the number of the lady is that the said lady, while behind bars at Zuaruangu cells occasionally handed items brought to her to some of her colleague inmates.

When her male counterparts were eventually convicted and sent to Navrongo while she was later freed, the lady kept visiting them at the Navrongo Prison and showing them empathy.

Seeing that he has had empathy and support from this lady than hid family members, he gave out her number to be specially invited to a program that could see him out of jail.

This was revealed by the Upper East Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Lawyer Abdullai Jalaldeen who is Coordinating that activity.

“When I went there and was interacting with them, this guy gave that lady’s number. So when I called the lady and asked, ‘do you have a relative who is in Navrongo cells’, she said no.

And I mentioned the name and it was the lady who told me this story not the inmate – how she got to know and how she has been helping – and this guy wish that this day that they are going to celebrate him in the prison, she should be present,” he narrated.

“As human beings, we all have our shortcomings. So if you meet somebody who is in a distress situation, depending how you approach that person or you deal with that person will indicate whether or not the person will reform”.
