The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is raising concern about the rate at which women in the Upper East Region are losing their husbands through road crashes.

Speaking in an interview on Breakfast News on Dreamz FM, public relations officer of the NRSA John Quashie indicated that young women are increasingly being widowed due to fatal road crashes that involve their husbands.

He indicated that about 90 percent of deaths that occurred in the region through road accidents were men, majority of whom had been married.

The trend, in his view, if not reversed may affect children’s upbringing as many men are breadwinners of their homes.

“We lost 65 people on our roads last year and out this 65, 60 were men, that’s almost 90 percent. This has been the trend for almost 5 years now. So the trend of young widows in the region is becoming unbecoming,” he stated.

“ Just January, we lost 10 people through road accidents, out of this number, 9 were males and only one female. So if 7 were 7 of the men were married, it means we now have 7 widows. So realize it is a disturbing trend”.

On the cause of these accidents, John Quashie blames the situation on impatient. He explained that most road users are impatient to obey traffic regulations, resulting in the crashes.

He, however, believes the new traffic measures being put in place will reduce such occurrences.

“Impatient is one of the key causes of accidents. You get to the traffic light, you don’t obey regulations. I don’t know where we are always rushing to. A stoppage time that does not take more than 5 minutes but we don’t have that patient for our turn to move”.
