In recognition of the efforts made by Alagumgube, a group advocating for and contributing to the diverse development of the Upper East Region, the government, through the Regional Minister, has granted the group access to the DRIP equipment to expand the runway at the airport site.
This is to enable the group to expand the airport site’s runway as requested by officials of the Ghana Airports Company.
During a visit to the site to make preliminary observations, officials of the Ghana Airports Company explained that they needed to expand the runway way by another 600 meters.
Currently, the expansion stands at 1,400 meters but the officials say there is a need for an additional 600 meters to make up for the 2000 meters they would need for the proper construction of the runway.
The District Road Improvement Program, DRIP which recently had the name change to Regional Emergency Mobile Maintenance Unit would be utilized to further expand the runway as required.
Speaking to Dreamz News, Gabriel Agambila Akakiire, Founder of Alagumgube, expressed delight over the level of support and interest shown by the Upper East Regional Minister and other stakeholders.
Mr. Agambila urged all well-meaning individuals in the region to support in efforts to have the project realized.
“The region is fully behind us. The Regional Minister is behind us and he is on his way to Accra to help in some of these processes. We just want to thank the Ghana Airports Company for recognizing what we did. The CEO of the Airports Company will be here in a few weeks and we are hoping that by the time she arrives, everything will be in place, everything will be set. I can only urge everyone to take an interest in the project for it to be realized,” he urged.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Sumbrungu Chief, Aaron Aberise, is hoping that the land given out decades ago for the airport project will finally be realized adding, there is enough space for the government if they so desire.
