NDC parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, John Dumelo, has expressed concern over the failure of government to resolve the perennial flooding in Ghana’s capital city including his constituency.
His concern follows Saturday’s heavy downpour that saw many parts of Accra and the Central Regional town of Kasoa flooded.
Pictures and videos circulated on social show that some roads and many homes were completely submerged in flood waters leaving commuters stranded on roads and displacing many residents. Some of the affected areas, according to reports, included Weija, Adabraka Sahara, Odorna, Adenta, Alajo and Agbogbloshie.
Residents of the affected areas were reportedly seen salvaging what was left of their properties to higher grounds while demanding for dredging and de-silting of drains in the capital town of Ghana and its environs to end the perennial flooding.
Reacting to the flooding in parts of Accra particularly his constituency, Mr. Dumelo who is seen in photos on social media walking with affected residents in the flood waters bemoaned the inability of city authorities to tackle the long-standing problem of floods in Accra.
He stated that he had attempted a solution to the problem but city authorities who restrained him from going ahead with his dredging of drains as way of dealing with the floods are yet to tackle the perennial occurrence of floods.
He therefore assured his constituents of his determination to permanently end the problem if he is elected as a Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wugoun Constituency.
“How long can we continue to leave our West land people in this situation when it rains? When we attempted fixing this, we were stopped, yet those who stopped us are yet to do something about this in Ayawaso West. Take my word, I will fix this when elected!” he said in a post on social media.
Mr. John Dumelo had Alleged that he was stopped by the Ayawaso Municipal Assembly from going ahead with the dredging of some drains in his constituency which constituents had complained to him about.
The Municipal Assembly, however, denied stopping Mr. Dumelo from continuing with dredging of the drains.
A statement issued by the assembly denying the allegation stated that it had invited Mr. Dumelo for a meeting with the Municipal Urban Roads and Workers Directors so as to draw his attention to the need to liaise with appropriate departments at the assembly for supervision of the dredging.
