The Member of Parliamenta for North Tongu Constituency has expressed worry over attacks on police stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region and the blockage of major roads leading into the region.
According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who is an MP for the area, such violent acts and display of impunity which he said appear to overwhelm the security agencies is unprecedented in the district.
While condemning what he described as coordinated invasion of the area, the NDC MP for North Tongu Constituency demanded for answers from government on the incident and assurance of the safety of the people in the area. He also wants the government to commence thorough and impartial investigation into the incident so as to unravel the motive and the masterminds of the criminal acts.
“I strongly condemn the coordinated armed invasion of North Tongu this dawn. Never have we experienced this level of violent siege and display of outright impunity with law enforcement appearing helpless even as some of their counterparts became victims. The least we can do is to demand answers from the state and assurances of better protection of citizens as is our constitutional right,” he said in post on social media.
Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed his sympathy to the victims of the incident and appealed to the residents of the area to exercise caution while the volatile situation is being curtailed.
He added that “we shall not be intimidated, neither shall we permit violent elements to destabilize the peace and tranquility we cherish so greatly.”
A group of armed men believed to be members of the Homeland Study Foundation, a secessionist group which has been clamouring for a break away from Ghana, reportedly attacked Aveyime and Mepe Police stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The armed men, Reports say, forcibly took over both police stations simultaneously, overpowered the officers on duty breaking into the amoury and made away with all weapons in the amoury in the wee hours of Friday, September 25, 2020.
According to eye witnessed accounts, they stripped the police officers on duty naked and took away their weapons before breaking into the armouries of the police stations.
The group also hoisted a so-called Western Togoland flag at Mepe and drove away one of the vehicles at the Mepe Police Station.
An unidentified member who spoke to Accra based Joy FM said they have three police officers in their custody, two of whom are injured. He indicated their resolve to continue rebelling until the president of Ghana succumbs and declares them independent.
