A team of police officers were on Saturday attacked by some youth in Sheaga, a community in the Talensi District of the Upper East region and freed suspects who were being transferred to the Regional Police Headquarters in Bolgatanga.
According to police sources, the group accosted the team of three police officers who were stationed at the premises of China Gold company also known as Shaanxi Mining Company Limited operating in Gbane but moving the arrested persons to the regional capital, Bolgatanga.
Nine suspects who were reportedly arrested by the private security of the mining company in their underground mining area at about 12 midnight and handed over to the police to be transported to Bolgatanga were all made to flee with their handcuffs.
The angry young men believed to be residents of the Sheaga community mounted road blocks, ordered the police to unlock the handcuffs on the suspects. They reportedly beat up the police officer who was driving the police vehicle, injuring him and setting free their ‘brothers’.
“This is not the first time this has happened. The Sheaga community is becoming notorious for these acts. They keep attacking and harassing police officers deployed there on duty. Yesterday was another incident. The suspects were in handcuffs but they succeeded in freeing them after attacking some of our officers,” a police source told dreamzfmonline.com.
Following a call for reinforcement after the attack and forceful release of the nine suspects, 20 community members were arrested over the incident and are due to be processed for court.
