MOST REV. ALFRED AGYENTA, BISHOP OF NAVRONGO-BOOLGATANGA CATHOLIC DIOCESE AND CHAIRMAN OF THE ST. JOHN BOSCO'S COLLEGE OF EDUCATION'S GOVERNING COUNCIL

A member of the St. John Bosco’s College of Education’s Governing Council has accused the Council’s Chairman of unilaterally recommending the replacement of the Principal of the institution Prof. Joseph Amikuzuno.

David Amoliga, who is the alumni representative on the council, said  Rev. Alfred Agyenta solely wrote to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), urging GTEC not to renew the Principal’s mandate.

In a letter addressed to the school’s Governing Council and dated September 10, 2024, GTEC directed the Council to evaluate Prof. Amikuzuno’s performance as Principal and determine whether he merited a renewal.

But the Chairman of the Council shelved this letter and without consultation wrote to GTEC, asking for Prof. Amikuzuno to be replaced contrary to the Council’s resolution, David Amoliga claimed.

“GTEC, on the 10th of September, on the 10th of September, 2024, wrote a letter to council, asking council to evaluate Amikuzuno’s performance and age. And if he seemed ready, they would allow him to continue as Principal. When our council chair got that letter, he put that letter under the carpets. He didn’t let that letter surface,” he stated.

“He didn’t see the need to avail to the council the letter that he has gotten. He rather wrote a unilateral letter, telling GTEC that they should terminate his appointment and allow him to appoint a new principal”.

A letter signed by Rev. Agyenta, ordering the Principal to hand over and step down from his position by December 31, 2024 sparked protests, with alumni and community’s members demanding a reversal of his removal.

David Amoliga, who eulogized Prof. Amikuzuno as an exceptional leader, said the university community is satisfied with the outgone Principal’s performance and that the Governing Council had recommended a renewal of his mandate.

However, the Chairman, due to what he believes is personal differences with Prof. Amikuzuno, sidelined members of the Council and decided alone the nonrenewal of his tenure.
