St. John Bosco College of Education has admitted a total of 597 qualified students to pursue various educational courses for the 2020/2021 academic year.
Out of the number, 211 of them are females representing 35 percent of the newly admitted students whiles the remaining 386 are males representing 65 percent.
Principal of the college, Dr. Joseph Amikuzuno who disclosed this at the college’s 15th matriculation ceremony and Feast Day said the number indicates an increase in enrollment by 84 percent compared to the number of students admitted in the last academic year.
Although the various educational programs of the college have received more applicants and admitted same, Dr. Amikuzuno bemoaned the low number of students enrolled in the science program offered by the institution.
According to him, while other courses have received as many as 235 students, the science program only got 35 students. This, he said, does not augur well for the school given that it is a science-biased college.
He is, however, confident of an increase in enrollment in the science programs as the school intends to embark on vigorous campaigns aimed at marketing its programs in all Senior High Schools in the country. He added that the school will take steps to expand its infrastructural facilities in order to increase its intake and possibly become the best College of Education in the country.
“Compared to the number of students admitted last, this year’s admissions increased by 273 students i.e. by about 84%. Notably, the B.Ed. Technical, Home Economics and Visual Arts programmes together have received 156 students, second only to the Bed Primary Education Programme with 235 students.
Council Chair, even though we are a Science-biased College, there are regrettably only 35 students in the B.Ed. Science Programme. This isn’t good enough and will be reversed next year when the College embarks on a vigorous campaign to market her programmes in all Senior High Schools in her catchment area. We hope to take steps to expand our infrastructure so as to be able to take in more students next year, and possibly become one of the largest COEs in Ghana,” he stated.
In his address to the matriculants, Dr. Amikuzuno underscored the significance of the ceremony as it officially ushers the students formally into the college. He assured them of management’s commitment to ensure an enabling environment which will see them excel in their various fields of study in the school and in their future careers.
While noting the institution’s lineage to the Catholic faith, the principal said no student will be discriminated against on the basis of their religious beliefs, tribe, sex or political affiliation emphasizing the school’s stance against sexual harassment.
He charged the students to cooperate fully with the tutors and management of the school to ensure a successful completion of their course of study as well as improve the sanitary condition of the college.
