Award-winning journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu has called for the scrapping of the law banning chiefs from taking part in active politics because, for him, the law has been useless given the conduct of chiefs in the country.
He argued that in this political campaign season, some chiefs have become more active in partisan politics than known party footsoldiers. They are seen and heard throwing their weight either behind John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party(NPP).
It is his contention that the constant flouting of the law that bars Chiefs from active politics with impunity is hypocritical, and such hypocrisy must be done away with.
“Dear #Ghana, let’s scrap the law banning chiefs from doing politics because it has been useless. As the 2020 campaign gathers momentum, some chiefs have become more politically active than the footsoldiers running after the campaign teams of JM and Nana. Kill the hypocrisy,” he asserted on social Media.
He suggestion comes in the wake of endorsement and open campaigns for politicians by Chiefs across the country when these politicians pay courtesy calls on them.
The Okyenhene last week asked his people to vote for President Nana Akufo-Addo so that he can continue with his good works. Also, the Chief of Mehame in the Bono Region openly campaigned for John Mahama, saying that his community got development under him, and that development has seen stalled with President Akufo-Addo in power.
Political scientist, Professor Ransford Gyampo has advised the chiefs against such partisanship saying it will spell doom for them as they erode their own influence. He stressed that they must be minded that political power is transient and they must be able to enjoy the support from both sides.
