Calls by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to former President John Dramani Mahama to apologise for what has been described as ethnocentric comments appears to have landed the second gentleman of the land in a crossfire of backlash on social media.
According to the Vice President, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer cannot go away with such derogatory comments and proceed to win the elections on tribal grounds.
“These are not the people you can blanketly call sakawa. So we will continue to call on John Mahama to apologise unreservedly for what he has endorsed. This election is going to be fought on our track record and not on tribalism. Therefore we want unity in Ghana. We want a President who will unite us and not divide us,” Dr. Bawumia said while addressing chiefs and people of Gushegu in the northern region.
The admonition of Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia has however set a stage for the measurement of his truthful utterances and honest claims on matters of the economy which a section of Ghanaian social media users have questioned.
Checks on the reactions of news followers on Dr. Bawumia’s calls for an apology on the NDC flagbearer, revealed the mixed reactions with majority of people turning the radar on the Vice President and placing him on same barometer of morality with the former President.
While a section joined Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia to condemn the former President and his defense of the controversial comments, a larger number of people have shot down his demand.
“You are seeking for equity, come with cleans hands. Will you also apologise for always lying to us,” a social media user by name Comrade Jonathan reacted.
