Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has charged former President John Dramani Mahama to apologise to the people of Akyem for his ‘Akyem sakawa’ comment.
According to the Vice President, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer cannot go away with such derogatory comments and proceed to win the elections on tribal grounds.
Former president Mahama in an interview on Woezor TV on Saturday, September 5, 2020 rejected claims by president Akufo-Addo that an article authored by MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo which Mr. Mahama shared on social media is a propagation of ethnocentric comments.
Mr. Mahama argued that the article and its content was in reference to only government officials of the said ethnic grouping and not the entire people of ethnic group. He also chided the president following president’s outrage over the article and former president Mahama sharing of same stating that the president is known for such unsavory language and therefore has no moral right to be enraged over such comments.
But addressing chiefs and people of Gushegu in the Northern Region on Sunday September 6, 2020, Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia suggested that northerners are not brought up and taught to insult people.
“These are not the people you can blanketly call sakawa. So we will continue to call on John Mahama to apologise unreservedly for what he has endorsed. This election is going to be fought on our track record and not on tribalism. Therefore we want unity in Ghana. We want a President who will unite us and not divide us,” he said.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on separate occasions described as shameful, the comments shared on the facebook page of Former President John Dramani Mahama which referred to some government officials and known private persons as fraudsters popularly known as ‘Sakawa’.
He reiterated his disappointment at the silence of clergymen and other independent figures in the country who have failed to condemn John Mahama’s comment.
