Vice President Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama is clinching onto tribalism to cover his incompetence ahead of the 2020 polls.
The former President has been heavily berated by leading members of the governing New Patriotic Party for his decision to share an article authored by Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo which contains claims that some government officials and known private individuals in the NPP have engaged in acts of fraud popularly called ‘sakawa’.
Though President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his disapproval of the association of his opponent to the comments which have been deemed ethnocentric, Dr. Bawumia has equally called for an apology from Mr. Mahama.
In an address to the chiefs and people of Gushegu during a campaign tour, the Vice President said the National Democratic Congress flagbearer is resulting to acts of tribalism to enable him cover up his failure when he was President.
“Come and show your competence in the delivery for the people of Ghana. But because you cannot show your competence, you are resulting to tribalism. We will not stand for tribalism,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He stressed the position of the NPP to continue to call on John Dramani Mahama to apologise to the people of Akyem for his comments.
The Vice President argued that the people of Akyem are proud of who they are and their significant contribution to the attainment of Ghana’s independence and the history of the country.
“This election is going to be fought on our record and not on tribalism,” he added.
