The president would today Sunday, August 16, 2020 at 8:00 PM address the nation on measures taken against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.
This would be president Akufo-Addo’s 15th address since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country on March 12, 2020.
His earlier addresses saw the announcement of imposition of restrictions on movements and social gatherings in the country. But these restrictions were later eased in subsequent addresses though the country had continued to record a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases. This raised concerns among health experts who had warned of health crisis should the country continue to ease the covid-19 induced restrictions.
The government however insisted that its decision was based on science and the living condition of the Ghanaian citizenry and maintained the observance of the safety protocols was enough to contain the spread of the virus.
It went ahead to further ease restrictions on social gatherings such as the reopening of schools, worships centres among others which saw final year students of various educational institutions returned for their exit examinations.
In his last address on Sunday, July 26, he announced further easing of restrictions which included the reopening of open-air drinking bars and tourist sites while giving transport operators the green lights to operate at full capacity and extending the duration of religious activities to two hours from an hour. The announcement also lifted the capping on attendees of religious and social activities.
Though it is not yet known what would be contained in the president’s address tonight, it was revealed yesterday on Joy FM’s news analysis Show, News File by one of his confidants, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako that country’s airports might be opened to international traffic next month.
Currently, Ghana’s cumulative confirmed cases of Covid-19 stands at 42,210 with 40,147 recoveries. The number of Covid-19 fatalities stands at 231.
