Management of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam construction have fought off assertions that work stalled on the project due to the unavailability of funds.
According to Public Relations Officer of the project, David Prah, the high level of water in the White Volta is the main reason work has been suspended.
Some workers of the project have disclosed in an interview on Joy News TV monitored by dreamzfmonline.com that the Chinese construction company Synohydro is yet to receive funds from government, a reason work has not fully commenced on the project.
Even though the contractors have cleared some parts of the project site, constructed their project camp sites, and road networks, commencement of actual work on the dam is yet to begin.
But reacting to the reports, the spokesman for the project said “Kindly note that the area we have even earmarked for construction of camp site are there. Unfortunately because of the high level of the water and the core area that we are going to work is in the water, it is very prudent and wise that we stay off and let the danger recede. From there we can proceed, otherwise how do we go? People’s properties have been flooded, meanwhile we need to value those properties. We will need to demarcate properly and lift what we have on the drawing on the site”.
Mr Prah assured that work will resume when the water level drops.
Though cabinet has reportedly approved $700 million for the project, sources at the construction company indicate that actual construction of the dam will only begin when funds are released to them. This comes nearly a year after President Nana Akufo-Addo cut sod for the project to begin.
