President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that he has asked the managing director of the Ghana Airport Company to commence the source of funding for constructing an airport in the Upper East Region.

According to the President, the airport’s construction in the region would be done through a public-private partnership with mining companies operating in the region to construct the facility.

The delay in the construction of the airport in the region has become a matter of concern for various stakeholders.

Traces of work on the Sumbrungu site meant for the construction of the airport in the region dates back to the 60s yet it has not been realized over the years.

To deliver on the project, President Mahama says his government is considering a partnership with the private sector to construct the airport.

“I have also asked the managing director of the Ghana Airport Company to commence the sourcing of funding for the construction of the Upper East Regional Airport. We intend to do this under a PPP module in conjunction with the gold mining companies in the region since this would also airlift their gold bulling safely to Accra from the Upper East Region,” the President assured residents.
