The People’s National Convention (PNC) is currently voting to choose a presidential candidate for the fast-approaching 2020 general elections. Three formidable candidates are in the race: David Apasera, Rev. Samuel Adjei-Debrah and Samson Asaki Awingobit.
David Apasera
A Former Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga Constituency, David Apasera is a much experienced politician and one of the best performing politicians in the PNC.
Against all odds, David Apasera won the Bolgatanga Constituency seat, now divided into Bolgatanga Central and Bolgatanga East, in the 2000 elections. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had presented formidable candidates but Mr Apasera emerged victorious and then beat them again in 2004.
He lost in the 2008 and 2012 elections to the NDC’s Opam-Brown Akolbire. A true party man, he has been unrelenting in trying to revitalise the PNC and make it a formidable force in the country, serving as National Treasurer of the PNC and Chairman of PNC finance committee from 2008 to 2015.
Earlier this year, he courted controversy when as president of the Ghana Association of Former MPs, a forum for Former Members of Parliament, he demanded unpaid ex-gratia from government for his members. The payments were flagged by the Auditor General, who said the former MPs were undeserving of the payments.
David Apasera, born on 25th APRIL, 1962 served as PNC Regional Party Secretary for the Upper East Region from 1999-2000.
He began running for the parliamentary seat in 1992. He won in 2001 and 2004 and lost the 2008 and 2012 parliamentary elections. He had served as Member of National Consultative Assembly from 1991 to 1992.
