Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu has resigned as leader of the Majority Caucus of Parliament.
The current longest serving lawmaker is said to have announced his resignation at a crunch meeting convened by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House with members of the caucus.
The meeting was meant to resolve a stand-off between some members of the caucus and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over attempts to change the caucus’ leadership.
Led by the First Deputy Speaker of the House, the group strongly registered their opposition against the move, stating that no external party had the authority to effect such change.
The situation raised tensions within the party and divided its front in Parliament.
The crucial meeting convened by the former leader of the party and president was therefore to calm the situation and possibly resolve the conflict.
However, no sooner had the meeting started than Mr. Kyei-Mensah Bonsu indicated his decision to step down, bringing the meeting to an early closure.
His decision is expected to pave way for the change in leadership as planned.
