Former District Chief Executive for Talensi Thomas Duanab Wuni Pearson says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has no better alternative candidate to its 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia is the party’s best bet and will be made candidate again ahead of the 2028 general elections, the former DCE emphasized.
“There is no better alternative to Bawumia. Bawumia is our alternative and he is the better alternative we have for now and we are sending him back,” he stated.
He defended the former flagbearer’s performance in the last elections, arguing candidates do not usually make it in their first attempt at the presidency.
Except in the case of former military ruler Jerry John Rawlings and John Dramani Mahama, whom the mantle fell on after the death of then sitting President John Evans Atta, he recalled, no other aspirant made it in their first attempt at the office of the presidency.
“What is new about our candidate in the person of Dr. Bawumia, if he went first and couldn’t make it after we haven’t done 8 years and everyone knows that this country eight years is very difficult to cross.”
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was then Vice-President, was elected flagbearer of the NPP in 2023 as the party sought to win a third consecutive elections in 2024.
However, he led the party to taste its worst defeat since 2000.
Some members of the party are already calling for his replacement to rejuvenate the party and its base.
But Duanab Wuni disagreed with these calls, saying the party has no other better alternative while declaring his unwavering support for the party’s former leader.
“If they bring him ten times, I’ll vote for him ten times. I know what is in the man. I know what that man can do. Unfortunate things happen. But if that man ever gets a chance to rule this country, we’ll see what that man can do.”
