The St. John Bosco College of Education, a teacher Training institution in the Upper East Region has emerged winner of the just ended National Insurance Debate (NID) Competition of the Northern Zone.

In a research dubbed Increasing Insurance Penetration in Ghana: The Challenges and Strategies, the National Insurance Commission (NIC), the regulatory body of insurance companies in Ghana, and the stakeholders of insurance sought to highlight the antecedents of the low insurance penetration and coverage.

The results of the study revealed that, delays in the payment of claims and the refusal of insurance companies to pay legitimate claims have led to loss of public trust does in the insurance sector a poor perception about insurance in our Ghana.

To reverse the situation, the National Insurance Commission decided to take steps to improve the insurance penetration by improving access to insurance.

As part of the strategies to improve insurance penetration, the NIC and the stakeholders of insurance, as directed by the new insurance Act, 2021, Act 1061, embarked on insurance education campaign through the formation of Insurance Awareness Clubs in some selected tertiary institutions in the country.

The clubs among other things were meant to create insurance awareness in tertiary students, disabuse people’s minds of the misconceptions of insurance and to become agents of change in their various communities with respect to insurance.

Soon after the formation of the Insurance Awareness Clubs in the various tertiary institutions, the NIC and the stakeholders of insurance decided to let the various institutions through their respective clubs, debate amongst themselves on various motions to educate and create awareness on issues related to insurance.

Primetime, the organizers of the debate zoned the institutions in Ghana into 2; the Northern Zone and the Southern zone.

The Northern zone debate competition took place in Kumasi at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on 4th November, 2022 whiles the Southern zone debate took place on the same day at the University of Cape Coast.

The 2 debaters who represented the club in St. John Bosco College of Education, BukariA bdul-Karim and Gabriel Appiah Awinyeya were able to beat Bolgatanga Technical University to become champions of the Northern zone at the final stage on 5th November, 2022, after conquering Tamale Technical University and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology at the initials.

Speaking to the media, the patron of the club at St. John Bosco College of Education, John Yanduglah Awuyah Akurugo, who prepared the students for the competition expressed his satisfaction and gratitude to God almighty and the entire team including staff of the institution for the success achieved.

He said, “I first of all thank God Almighty for this remarkable achievement. I thank the club president Hayford Aburiya, the Club members and the entire staff of the institution especially the Principal of the college Prof. Joseph Amikuzuno and the Vice Principal, Rudolf Anyoka Nyaaba for the supportive roles they played for the club”.
