The National Democratic Congress has announced the establishment of universities in all the newly created regions in the country if it wins the 2020 General Elections.
This was disclosed by flagbearer of the party, John Dramani Mahama at the launch of the party’s manifesto for the 2020 elections at the University for Professional Studies, Accra on Monday September 7.
The announcement which is contained in the party’s 2020 manifesto will see to the establishment of universities in the North East, Savannah, Oti and other newly created regions without universities in the country.
This is part of the numerous policies the NDC pledged to undertake in the education sector to improve access to quality education in the country should it be given the mandate in the December polls.
Giving highlights of key policies of the 2020 manifesto of the party, the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama said the NDC will “provide universities in the new regions that do not have any.”
The party has also promised to absorb 50 percent of fees for tertiary students for the 2020/2021 academic year.
The vice presidential candidate who made the disclosure at the launch of the party’s manifesto said the absorption of half of the fees for tertiary students for the next academic is to cushion students and parents against the financial constraints that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought upon them.
“We know how Covid-19 has impacted an already weak economy and personal finances and we must not let this become another barrier to opportunities. That is why the next NDC administration will absorb fifty percent of fees for tertiary students for the 2020/2021 academic year as an incentive to mitigate the effect of COVID -19 on students and their families.” She stated.
The NDC has always touted itself as the only political party with unmatched record in the establishment of universities in the country claiming the establishment of UDS, UHAS, UENR among others as its achievements.
In 2012, it promised to establish a university in the Eastern Region. After it won the 2012 elections, the party’s government under John Dramani Mahama drafted a university bill which was subsequently passed by parliament for the establishment of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in the Eastern Region.
