The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has dismissed allegation by the Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman Constituency that names of 21,000 registered voters including his name were omitted from the register of the constituency.
In a statement dated September 19, 2020 with a portion of the register of the Ashaiman Constituency which captures the details of the MP attached, the Electoral Commission described the allegation by Ernest Henry Norgbey, MP for the Ashaiman Constituency as false and called on the general public to disregard his claims.
According to the EC, the allegation of omission of names of prospective voters by the MP is a deliberate attempt to tarnish its credibility and the credibility of the newly compiled voters register.
“The Member of Parliament is on record to have stated that the names of 21,000 registered voters are missing from the register. The Commission wishes to categorically state that this is false. The Member of Parliament is also on record to have stated that his name is not in the provisional register. Again, this is false. For the benefit of our stakeholders, we attach a portion of the register for the Ashaiman Constituency with the photograph of the MP,” the EC said in the statement.
“The public should therefore disregard his statement, which is a deliberate effort to tarnish the credibility of the Commission and the Voters Register,” it added.
The Commission explained that registered voters whose names are not on the provisional register being exhibited may be on the Exception List or Multiple List. It added that the names may also be missing due to incomplete voter transfer.
The commission noted that the exhibition exercise which began on September 18 and the inclusion process provides for such persons to have their names included in the final Voters Register.
It therefore urged all registered voters to take part in the ongoing exhibition exercise to that ensure their details are duly captured in the register.
Ernest Henry Norgbey, Ashaiman MP on Friday, September 18 alleged that names of 21,000 registered voters including his name were omitted from the register of the Ashaiman Constituency.
The EC through its Public Relation Officer, Sylvia Annor refuted the claims.
The MP, however, claimed that his name was restored on the register after he raised the alarm over the omission while insisting that about some 7,000 names of registered voters are still missing from the register and has since given the commission a 48-hour ultimatum to restore the names allegedly omitted from the register.
