The officials of the National Service Scheme (NSS) Secretariat in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality have been accused of extorting money from NSS personnel undertaking their 1 year mandatory national service in the municipality.

According to some aggrieved service personnel, NSS personnel in the municipality are made to pay an amount of GH¢5 before their monthly evaluation forms are received and endorsed by officials of the municipal NSS secretariat.

Personnel who refused to pay the amount being demanded are said to have had their forms rejected and risk not receiving their monthly allowance of GH¢559.

This comes on the back of demands by service personnel for an increase in the monthly allowance paid to them. NSS personnel are currently paid an amount of GH¢559 as monthly allowance. But this, the personnel argued, is not enough to match up to the rising cost of living in the country.

They have, therefore, appealed to government to consider increasing their monthly allowance so as to enable them meet their basic needs.

NSS personnel in the country have not seen an increase in their allowance for the past 4 years. The allowance was increased from GH¢350 to GH¢559 in April, 2017 and has since remained unadjusted.
