Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has noted that despite the recent violent disturbances in the area allegedly carried out by secessionist, his constituents are not intimidated and are determined to take part in Ghana’s democracy, especially in the upcoming general elections.

Analysts have explained that increased security presence in the area as a result of the violent attacks could leave voters intimidated thereby reducing participation in the upcoming general elections, which are just about two months away.

But Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa has stated that in spite of the “violent insurgency” there, his constituents are poised to participate fully in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He made the comment yesterday after filing his nominations for the parliamentary elections at the District Office of the Electoral Commission in his constituency.

“I have today successfully filed my nominations with the district office of the Electoral Commission to contest as Member of Parliament for my beloved North Tongu Constituency on the ticket of the great NDC…

It is instructive to note that despite the recent violent insurgency, the good people of North Tongu are not intimidated and are determined to actively participate in the Ghanaian democratic experiment,” he stated on social media Monday, 5th October, 2020.

Following alleged secessionist attacks on 25th September 2020 in the region, Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa has been a leading voice in calling for calm, asking the security and intelligence agencies act to forestall further attacks and educating people on the falsity of the claims of the secessionist groups on which they are seeking to get the Volta Region and other parts of the country to secede.

Meanwhile Government has assured that adequate security has been provided to avert further ‘secessionist’ attacks in the Volta Region.
