Dr. Michael Adongo Ayamga, a Senior Lecturer at the University for Development Studies, UDS is urging MPs to desist from further enhancing their benefits. Instead, he wants the MPs to look into the pressure they have brought upon themselves and streamline their activities and role as members of parliament.
According to Dr. Ayamga, it will be an insult to the general public if MPs should go ahead to further enhance their benefits as they seek to do since their actions mirror the State of the country.
On Monday, after paying glowing tribute to former and current MPs who have died, MPs of the 8th parliament made a case for the setting up of an adhoc committee to look into their welfare.
But this move according to the senior Lecturer is uncalled for since MPs already have a lot of benefits.
“For them to think that they are not receiving any fair treatment is rather a slap on the people of this country,” he stated.
“How many people get a car every 4 years? How many people get Article 71 retirement emoluments every 4 years. I think that our Maps are not being fair to the people of this country. They are asking for too much”.
He added, “I think that they should be working towards creating a system that will decouple the unnecessary pressure they have brought upon themselves, put them in some institutions and agencies to ensure that their constituents direct the pressure towards these entities and leave them to do their work”.
