The Minority in Parliament want Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah to resign from her post following revelation that she stashed millions of cash in her Ablelemkpe’s residence.
In a post on social media, Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson said the action of the minister is grievous and has the tendency to undermine accountability and transparency in governance.
While calling for an immediate probe to ascertain the source and legitimacy of the cash, Dr. Forson entreated Ms. Dapaah to resign her post to pave way for a thorough investigation into the matter.
“We cannot overlook such a serious development that has the potential to undermine the very principles of probity, accountability, and transparency in our governance.
Given the magnitude and gravity of this situation, it is essential that an immediate and impartial investigation be carried-out to ascertain the source and legitimacy of these funds. I strongly urge the concerned Minister to voluntarily step aside from her duties until the relevant state institutions have conducted a thorough and independent investigation into this matter,” Dr. Forson said in a post on social media.
An Accra Circuit Court heard that an amount of $1 million, another amount of €300,000 and millions of Ghana Cedis as well as other items belonging to the minister and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour have been stolen from their Abelemkpe residence.
The accused in the matter being heard before the court are 2 house helps – current and a former – and 3 others.
The two are said to have conspired and stolen the monies stashed in the minister’s home between July and October, 2022.
They subsequently used the spoils to acquire properties including houses and gave some to the 3 other suspects.
The minister was said to be oblivious of the ongoing theft until when her husband caught their house help hiding in their room.
The maid was said to have burgled the room in an attempt to steal more but had to hide behind the door when she sensed Mr. Osei Kuffuor entering the room.
The revelation has raised concerns over the source of such huge amounts of many, with many calling for her resignation and an investigation into the issue.
