Founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the election of Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer of the NPP was not the reflection of the will of majority of the party members.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe suggested that the Vice-President was imposed on the party and its members by the president and then leader Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to him, but for the backing of the president and his government and the resources pumped into his campaign for the position, Dr. Bawumia would not have won the NPP presidential primary.
“He has an uphill task. I know Bawumia well. Bawumia is now in a tight corner because he is not himself. Secondly, he’s been put in a position that is not the will of the majority of the party members. These are clear signs,” he stated.
“ But for the backing of Akufo-Addo with money, Bawumia couldn’t have won that position. He is a nice gentleman but I would say he is in the wrong terrain”
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said this while assessing the chances of the governing party in an interview with JoyNews.
He stated that there are deep-seated cracks within the party due to what, in his view, is the bad leadership of the president.
He said the disunity within the rank and file of the NPP coupled with what he described as mess created by the Akufo-Addo government makes the party’s quest to retain power unattainable.
“The Ashanti Region now is going to be divided into sections – Alan Kyerematen is going to have half of it, NPP is going to have half of it and even within the NPP, there divisions there and of course, the NDC has slice there”.
He added, “So you ask yourself, how strong shall we be, a region that has been our strong hold, are we going to be strong? And also think about the mess that we have created during these 8 years. People are no fools at all”.
