President-elect John Dramani Mahama has asked the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament to nominate Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin for re-election as Speaker of the 9th Parliament.

The President-elect gave the directive after consultation with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the NDC, a statement issued by the Office of John Mahama and signed by his Special Aide, Felix Kwakye Ofosu said.

While extolling Alban Bagbin’s success in politics, the statement said, “he brings a wealth of experience to the position, which will prove vital in steering the affairs of Parliament at this critical period in Ghana’s democratic and legislative development”.

It added, “the President-elect is convinced that under the stewardship of the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin, Ghana’s Parliament will be further strengthened to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibility”.

Currently the Speaker of the 8th Parliament, which tenure expires on 7th January, Alban Bagbin was elected in a chaotic but historic election that spanned from the eve to the morning of January 7, 2021.

He became the first member of a opposition party to lead parliament in the history of the country after beating Mike Aaron Oquaye, who was seeking re-election having led the 7th Parliament.
