Former PRO Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Prof. David Millar says he will bank his hopes on former president John Dramani Mahama to take drastic action towards fixing the country’s economic and leadership crisis.
Speaking in an interview with Breakfast Today’s host James Nana Tsiquaye, the educationist argued that the former president, if given the mandate again, could take such tough decisions that will set the country on the path of progress without fear of losing his popularity since he will not be seeking re-election.
“John Mahama has only 4 years, so if you ask me to look among the two, I will account on him because he has 4 years term to work in such a way that he works himself out 4 years and the system runs. But if you go to babysit the system, it’s going to be no hope,” he stated.
He believes past and present leaders of the country failed to resolve the long-standing issues inhibiting its development because of their desire to stay in power.
If given the mandate again, Prof. Millar wants the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to overhaul the entire governance architecture in his first 100 days in office to right the wrongs.
He said this while speaking on the prospects of the country.
While reaffirming his faith in the future of Ghana, Prof. Millar stated that it will take a bold and a decisive leader to transform the country.
He disagreed with assertions that Mr. Mahama has nothing better to offer the country.
He said although he failed when he was given the opportunity years ago, it might have learnt his lessons and will be a better leader if elected.
“It’s true that somebody can be a bad leader, he leaves office, he learns his lessons and comes in and be an excellent leader. So I don’t buy into the politics that ‘oh, you were there once and you couldn’t deliver and therefore, if we give you another opportunity, you wouldn’t deliver’” .
