President John Dramani Mahama has left Accra for Bawku and Nalerigu in a frantic attempt to broker peace among warring factions in the conflict-torn town of Bawku.
The conflict has been escalating in recent years with threatening spillover to nearing towns and region.
Dozens of people have been killed in violent clashes in the town and surrounding areas as well as highways leading to the place and neighboring Walewale since 2021, sparking concerns among security watchers.
Between January 6 and 11, 2025, two cars – one Bawku-bound and the other Kumasi-bound – were attacked at Bawku and Pusu- Namoo in the Talensi District, resulting in the death of at least two.
Houses have also been torched in Bawku and several killed in violent attacks by armed bandits believed to belong to the warring factions in the conflict.
Though the security have stepped up their surveillance of the area, seizing weapons being used by the bandits, the attacks have persisted.
A communique signed by Presidential Spokesperson Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announcing Mahama’s visit to the areas, said, “The President is determined to resolve the decades-old conflict in Bawku and will use the visit to engage the conflict factions and key stakeholders to promote dialogue to achieve lasting peace”.
The visit follows a meeting with security chiefs in Accra over the matter.
