Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama appears determined to erase whatever gains his main potential contender in the 2024 elections may have made in the Upper East Region.

This is because Mr. Mahama is beginning his campaign in the region just few days after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party concluded his in the administrative area.

Dr. Bawumia, who is seeking to succeed his boss as president and ultimately, extend the NPP’s stay in office by another 4 years, began his constituency-focused campaign tour in the region Friday, July 26, 2024.

The campaign lasted 5 days during which he visited each of the 15 constituencies, wrapping it up Tuesday after a rally in the regional capital, Bolgatanga.

His tour drew massive crowds, of hundreds – all cladded in blue, white and red.

He did put forward his vision for the country and the region before each gathering he met but he would not end his address without jabbing his likely main contender.

But just when his messages were about sinking in, John Mahama announced his tour of the region, beginning Saturday, August 3, 2024.

A statement signed by his spokesperson, Joyce Bawa Mogtari said the NDC presidential candidate will be joined by party executives, Members of Parliament and “stakeholders” in “this significant campaign tour following the electrifying launch in the Northern Region”.

It added, “This year, the campaign strategy will prioritise smaller events, community engagements, and targeted activities aimed at fostering personal connections and understanding the needs of the citizens”.

The statement said Mr. Mahama is resolved to canvass support from the Ghanaian populace “by leveraging his extensive experience as a leader and promoting the NDC’s development agenda as the best pathway towards building the Ghana we all want together”.

It further called on the general public to participate and support his campaign activities, stating that, “your support and participation are vital as we embark on this journey together”.
