President John Dramani Mahama has, by an Executive Instrument, reduced the number of Ministries from 30 to 23.
The new Executive Instrument, the Civil Service (Ministries) Instrument, 2025 that has effected the change in the number of ministries was gazetted on January 9, 2025, replacing the Civil Service (Ministries), 2021.
While some of the ministries have been scrapped completely, others have been modified.
The Information Ministry, for instance, has been scrapped while the Youth and Sports Ministry has been decoupled to create two separate ministries – Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.
The Local Government and Decentralization Ministry and that of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs have been merged and renamed Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The Ministry of Communication and Digitization under the immediate past Akufo-Addo administration will now be known as the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, reducing the mandate of the then Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation to Environment, Science and Technology.
