The New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region is reminding President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his promise to restore peace in Bawku and its surrounding communities.
“I would kindly want to remind the President to keep his word on how to keep peace in the Bawku enclave. For me, that is the first and foremost thing that I want the people to raise to our President,” the Regional Communication Director of the NPP Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa said.
Speaking on Breakfast News on Dreamz FM ahead of the President’s visit to the region, Peter Ayinbisa decried the recent escalation of violence in the area that has claimed the lives of many including a military officer.
Ayinbisa noted that John Mahama, before his election in the December 7, 2024 election, pledged to ensure peace and tranquillity prevailed in the area if elected President.
He is, therefore, reminding the President to honour his promise of restoring peace to the area.
“Prior to the election, he said that when he was President the other time, Bawku was peaceful. So he didn’t understand why Akufo was President and Bawku had come back to a war-torn area.
Just quite last week, we saw what happened in Bawku,” he stated.
“So, I want to remind our President that he made that comment. So, he should stick to his word to find lasting solution and peace to the Bawku area.”
The NPP is further demanding that the President and his government fulfil their promise to complete the Bolgatanga – Bawku – Pulmokum Road and build the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam, which they criticized the previous administration for not living up to expectations.
Other campaign promises of the NDC and John Mahama that the NPP is demanding fulfilment are the construction of an airport, the upgrade of the Regional Hospital to a teaching hospital and the revival of defunct factories.
Peter Ayinbisa said although it is early days yet for all those promises to be fulfilled, it is important that the President be reminded about the social contract he entered with the people of the region.
“I know it’s early days. But he needs to be reminded that the people of Upper East Region need an airport.
And he said that it was possible to have an airport here. So, we need to remind him about that airport.”
President John Mahama is scheduled to hold rally in the Upper East Regional capital today to thank the people of the region following his huge victory in the area in the last election.
