Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says there is no animosity between him and former president John Dramani Mahama.
According to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his constant criticism of John Dramani Mahama is not a personal vendetta against the former president but an intellectual discourse aimed at the development of the country.
He said although they criticize each other in public discourse, they laugh off about their criticism of each other in private conversations.
“I don’t have an issue with him but we are in a world of competitive politics and competitive ideas. There is nothing personal. If he brings a bad policy, I will call him out on it and if I bring a bad policy, I’m sure he will call me out on it. But that doesn’t mean there is animosity. We will criticize one other on political basis but when we meet, we will talk about it and share a good laugh,” he said.
The vice president who was speaking in interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio revealed that he has a closed relationship with Mr. Mahama which dates back to when they were children.
This relationship, he disclosed, stemmed from the cordial relationship which existed between his father and Mr. Mahama’s, and their families adding that their fathers were colleagues and peers.
The running mate of president Akufo-Addo for the 2020 Elections said notwithstanding his relationship and affection for the NDC’s presidential candidate, he believes president Akufo-Addo is a better leader for the country than his “friend” Mahama.
“John Mahama is a good friend of mine. We grew up together. Of course, he is older than me. Our fathers were very good friends. They were colleagues and contemporaries. Our families grew up quite close to each other. We don’t have a personal problem at all. As a person, I like him. It is just that Nana Akufo-Addo is a better president and he is the one we want to lead this country” he said an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira Bawumia fiercely criticized Mr. Mahama prior to the 2016 General Elections describing him in terms some considered unpleasant.
In a recent interview on same platform, Samira Bawumia who is now the Second Lady of the Republic stated that she has not regretted her description of the former president as incompetent.
According to Mrs. Samira Bawumia, the former president had failed to improve the lives of Ghanaians and bring the much-needed development as was expected of him but rather worsened their living conditions. This, the wife of the vice president asserted, was a demonstration of sheer incompetence hence she and her party could not have described him in any better terms.
