Celebrated journalist and General Manager of Citi FM/Citi TV, Bernard Koku Avle has said that even though there are laws to protect journalists from attacks, the laws don’t seem to have guaranteed the safety of journalists in the country.
Speaking at the 16th Edition of the “Kronti ne Akwamu” (Democracy and Governance) Lecture, he noted that notwithstanding the laws meant to protect journalists from attacks in their line of duty, incidents of attacks on journalists have increased.
He lamented that officers of security agencies, enforcers of the law, who should know batter, are rather the ones leading the pack in attacks on journalists.
“However, while these laws exist on paper, the attacks against journalists have gone up, with security forces leading the charge. The promulgation of these laws does not seem to have guaranteed the safety and freedom of journalists to do their work.”
The ‘Kronti ne Akwamu’ Lecture is an annual lecture organised by civil society organization, the Centre for Democratic Development, CDD-Ghana. This year’s lecture was under the theme: Radio, Rulers, and the Ruled in the 4th Republic.
