Former President John Dramani Mahama has joined calls for the consideration of a proposal for the state to provide of armed police guards for Members of Parliament.
His call comes on the back of the killing of Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Hon. Ekow Quansah Hayford on Friday morning.
The New Patriotic Party MP was shot together with his driver by suspected armed robbers on his return from campaign activities.
In a message of condolence to the family of the late MP, former President John Dramani Mahama said “This is a most despicable act, and we all look forward to the security agencies investigating and arresting those involved and bringing them speedily to justice.”
The National Democratic Congress flagbearer bemoaned the falling state of security and safety of Ghanaians following recent incidents of armed robberies and some violent attacks that have led to deaths.
“There is a growing climate of insecurity in Ghana. Dastardly armed robberies and violent crime have become a common occurrence. I urge government and the security agencies to do more to protect the Ghanaian people. It’s probably also time to look at the provision of armed police guards for our MPs,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo assured members of parliament of government’s resolve to take a serious consideration of steps to protect them and called for the apprehension of killers of the MP.
