Former President John Dramani Mahama has provided details about how he will end the ‘double track’ system in Senior High Schools (SHSs) within a year, stressing that contrary to reports that he is against the Free Senior High School Policy that has brought about the ‘double track’ system, he is fully in support of the policy and will expand it.

He noted that he will end the system by speedily completing all abandoned Community Day Schools, expanding infrastructure in existing schools, and including private schools in the free SHS policy.

He made this known at community durbar of chiefs and farmers at Fawohoyeden in the Asunafo North district of the Ahafo Region, as part of his campaign tour of the region.

The double track system – a sort of shift system that divides students in senior high schools in to two groups for each year group so that when one half is in school, the other half stays at home – has been implemented due to the huge number of students caused by the implementation of the free SHS policy, a policy which makes SHS free for all students implemented by the New Patriotic Party(NPP) government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The double track system has come under criticism from sections of the public. Government has maintained that the system is a temporary measure, reiterating promises to end it in a few year’s time. But for John Mahama, the system will be ended within a year.

He also promised to make life better for Ghanaians if he elected President again, chastising the current government for having made life hard for Ghanaians.

“These days nothing works. Whether as a farmer, trader, driver or mechanic, the hardship is unbearable everywhere,” he lamented, promising to make things a lot better when he becomes President again.

He is now in the Ahafo Region as part of his regional campaign tour.
