The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensah has assured Ghanaians that the commission will not manipulate the outcome of the 2020 general elections.
Speaking at the launch of the ‘2020 Agent of Peace Campaign in Accra’ on Sunday, Mrs. Jean Mensah said the systems put in place by the commission makes it impossible for any actor to manipulate the figures of the elections.
“The impression is often created that the EC takes decisions on its own. This is not the case. There is a tendency for citizens to believe that the electoral commission can manipulate the election. I’m here to announce that this is impossible,” she said.
The EC Chair admonished political parties to help diffuse such perceptions by joining the election management body to educate the citizens on the activities of the commission.
Following its decision to compile a new voters register, the EC has been heavily criticized by opposition political parties and civil society organisations over the conduct of the exercise and related matters including the exclusion of old voter ID cards and birth certificates as primary documents for the new registration.
It will be recalled that several Inter Party Advisory Committee meetings held by the commission ended up in disagreements by some parties including the National Democratic Congress.
While a section of the public and some leading political actors suspect the EC is in bed with the governing party to rig the 2020 elections, the commission has strongly assured that won’t happen.
